HammRadio Today: 1/7/2009 -- <br>News from the iPod War Battlefront

Good news from Apple, now all the music will be DRM free. I just hope that when I get them on my machine, they don't stop in the middle of the song. I am still at war with my iPod. Right now the 5G iPod is working okay, but 10 to 20% of the songs are "incomplete." [Note: I've encountered incomplete songs in the past, it would occur on a handful of songs and were QUITE rare. My iPod had 13000 songs on there. There just seems to be a new issue.] They play fine in iTunes. And these songs played FINE before, so either the iPod's hard disk is giving out OR there's a software issue that needs to be addressed. Good luck finding any kinds of help on the forums that don't involve addressing things I've already done?

Odd symptom with the songs, If you "fast forward" to later in the song, the song will play fine. But second time around it will "fail" at the exact same spot.

It also should be noted, that my brand new iPod Touch works PERFECTLY with the same playlists.

  • Did you reboot? Yes.
  • Did you reset? Yes.
  • Did you reinstall? Yes.
  • Did you go through the 5Rs? Yes.

I did all that and it's still not workign right. Did you try another USB port. COME on. Of course. Did you use a different cable?? Hmmm. I'll try that again. But what I think I I need to do is IF the next time I re-sync the iPod Here are the steps I will follow:
  1. Reboot Vista Machine
It seems like if the machine is not rebooted BEFORE synching it doesn't recognize the iPod.
  2. Next re-boot the iPod
Again, this seems to help the Vista machine recognize the iPod correctly
  3. Remove All Playlists
I'm thinking if I sync up the playlists in increments so the machine is not trying to load 1000s of songs at one shot that could cause some problems. Sync about 100 songs at a time?
  4. Try a new cable
Could it be as simple as that? I don't know
  5. Disconnect properly
It could be that the iPod is not disconnected properly and that screws it up. So I have to be in the habit of "ejecting" the iPod from the iTunes menu. This doesn't always help the case. But perhaps it will prevent other corruption. All of these workarounds seem silly. But fine, I get it. I just don't know why all of a sudden (in the last 30 days) the iPod has had these kind of issues.
If you have any suggestions about how to handle these issues please email me here.

And oh... Happy Birthday to my Sister!!
