Joe Escalante, lawyer, bass player for the Vandals, plays in a Smiths/Morrissey tribute band, former entertainment executive, and host of the best morning show on terrestial radio died was fired "asked ... to stop doing mornings" from Indie 103.1 (KDLD-FM). That's Los Angeles. Orange County actually.

When I compliment folks who do radio, it's serious business. Because I'm jealous as all hell, and I think I can do a better job than most of them. Hell, I know I can. But I'm a loser, who is afraid to take chances. I'm afraid to try new things. I'm afraid to say fuck it, I did the punk rock thing, let's go be a lawyer. Fuck it forget working for CBS or whereever, let's go be a radio guy. What's the next thing?

My buddy Beer-z and I were lamenting this loss, today. Just another loss in our entertainment/pop culture lifetime. My buddy introduced the station to me after he visited LA and heard great music, we were searching for a replacement to WOXY which died a couple of times. Music that we listen to. I think it was Snow Patrol that he heard out there. However, long ago that was. Dicky Barret was the morning man when we first started listening. yes, that Dicky Barret. You know the guy who's friends with Bill Simmons the Sports Guy?

It's no joke when I say his show was great. It had a solid morning cast, none of that morning zoo stuff. No extended periods of talk that was uninteresting or stupid. He never took himself too seriously, he would frequently hit the wrong button or play the wrong song. But it never sounded like it was a college radio program. David Lynch was his weather man, still can get his report there. I'll still be able to get the surf report from Surf Junkie Jeff. He talked about wine every wednesday. And daily he'd stray from the playlist and play a song that he liked. Whether it was Devo or some old school punk song or even some modern dance tune that would be heard on the Q102 equivilant.

Escalante will be survived by continuing his Barely Legal Radio show. Now it will expand to two hours. That's pretty cool. Because I enjoy the heck out of that show. So Joe won't be gone from our lives. But Joe's morning man, Timothy Olyphant. Yes. Hitman's Timothy Olyphant. Deadwood's Tim O, dammit. He won't be in my life anymore. How will I be able to go on with out hearing Tim scream into the phone "LET'S TALK SPORTS!" I'll miss him most of all.

So today I'm bummed. And tomorrow, I'll be sending Indie my reel to take his place. Because why the fuck not?

Story Summary
I lost a friend today. Okay, he just felt like a friend. He was the best morning show host in a America, that no one ever heard of. Which is probably why they fired him.
